The Fallen to Appear in "Transformers:  The Fallen"

July 29, 2008

By: Son Goshin

Well it seems that the speculation on what exactly "The Fallen" subtitle in the new Transformers movie meant has come to an end.  MTV got an interview with IDW publishing, who is doing a five part mini-series bridging the gap between the two Transfomers movie.  In the interview, it was confirmed that The Fallen in the movie's subtitle will be the main villan:

" We're going to explore the background of The Fallen — the main villain of the movie — as well as expand on the 'Reign of Starscream' story that we're doing and tie everything in to what this next movie is going to be," explained writer Chris Mowry, who partners on the book with artist Alex Milne "

New Info on Dragonball!

July 28, 2008

By: Vegeta

The news just keeps pouring into today!  A user over at DBMB claims that he was an extra in the Dragonball movie. Everything seems to be legit with his claim.  Here's what he had to say.

"I just listened to your latest podcast, the first one I’ve heard, and while I admire you’re optimism regarding the writing in my opinion it will be fairly shallow.

******SPOILER ALERT******
One of the first scenes we shot was Goku’s bike getting trashed by Texas Battles character “Carey Fuller’s” car. Chatwin says in an adolescent voice “Dude my Bike!”, to which Texas looks over at his friend and responds, “Did you just fart?”

So if that sounds like quality writing, then I guess it’ll be ok. Most of the dialog for the first 6 days follow this kind of teenage drivel…

I was lucky enough to be in the movie so I can only pray they didn’t cut me out of anything, I’m a huge fan so I am very grateful I was able to be in the film but from a critical fan’s point of view I’m going to hate at LEAST the opening scenes dialog, because I, and others, were cringing on set….

Anyway, I also have photo’s on set, I can probably get others, cause we were all taking them, especially of props, like Goku’s bike, etc….

Cya"

He goes on to reference the photo of the classroom scene, with Teto, that we saw awhile back and adds:

"This picture was during one of the few scenes I didn’t get into, I really wanted in these classroom scenes because they were all close ups but there was a lot of political crap going on with the extra casting people… anyway…

Goku with his classmates are looking at pictures of the moon which even a picture causes him to go into a trance and almost transforms him. Chatwin has to stare into the camera in this scene.

I was only on the set for the 6 days of Mexico City filming, I wasn’t chosen to go to Durango… more politics, so ya."

Also he provided a picture which he says he took along with more magazine scans.  To see the hi-res version and the scans click the image below.

"Tyrese said that he's been very involved in the attempt to bring the classic '80s cartoon series to the big screen and seemed to hint that a deal is very nearly complete. We asked him what character he'd be playing and he just smiled and said that there's a number of options on the table."

Fox Gets Cowboy Bebop!
July 23, 2008
By: Adam

It would seem that a lot of anime fans' dreams just came true.  On Monday Fox signed a deal with Sunrise to gain the rights to make a Live Action Cowboy Bebop movie. Erwin Stoff (The Matrix, A Scanner Darkly) is set to produce the movie and told IFMagazine.com the project is "in the really early stages" since the parties "just signed it the other day."

Stoff goes on to say that there will be "a real degree of faithfulness," with the movie.  He also had this to say: “When I met with them in Japan, one of the first things that I brought up was the experience that we had on A Scanner Darkly, and how hard we worked to remain faithful to Philip K. Dick, and that was our big concern here.”

So it seems that the ball is starting to get rolling for the adaptation of the classic series known as Cowboy Bebop.  We'll keep you posted as more information becomes available.  For now, discuss this most excellent news over on the Forums.

VIZ Productions to Produce Several Live Action Anime

July 22, 2008

By:  Son Goshin

It would seem that folks up at VIZ Media have created a new arm in their corporation.  VIZ Productions has been created and apparently, their task is to produce live action American movies of Japanese manga and anime.  ICv2 recently spoke with VIZ Productions Head of Production, Jason Hoff, in a lengthy interview.  Here's a small snippet of it, and thanks to Vegetasgirl for the heads up:

The announcement said you’re planning to have some properties licensed out to studios to make, and others that you might keep in-house.  Do you have any guidelines or particular strategies in terms of what things you might want to keep in-house vs. the things you license out?

"Frankly, all of that is still evolving now, and it would be difficult to talk about specific strategies.  One model certainly is that we’re going to be making mostly studio movies-- it’s a version of the basic film-producer model.  It’ll be a little bit different in that we’ll also be working with the parent companies and the creators in Japan and representing their interests in the United States.  Otherwise, we will serve as a production company, which means that we’re going to be taking the existing source material and try to sell it to the studios and mostly have the screenplays paid for and developed by the studios and have the studios finance and distribute the movies.

We think that these titles are going to be strong enough to attract very significant acting, directing and writing talent.  And more and more, the studios have been buying a little bit less on concept and looking more to buy properties that do have talent attachment.  I’ve worked with a lot of directors in my career and many screenwriters and we’ll be looking to use that base and move beyond that as well to attach talent to our properties often before we bring them into the studios.

Over the last several years, some of the early adopters of Japanese animation and manga have been young filmmakers.  Certainly people like the Wachowskis and many others--Quentin Tarantino, maybe Zack Snyder--a lot of these guys show a manga influence and they love this stuff.  So to some degree, in trying to attach talent to these properties we hope that we’ll be preaching to the choir and an audience that is already familiar with this stuff and hopefully wanting to make movies of our manga. "

We already know that a new Death Note movie is coming.  Does this mean that we can also see popular titles making a debut on the big screen such as Bleach and Naruto?  Read the entire interview above and don't forget to discuss this over on our Forums.

"It's a very strong young female role, and her name is Chi Chi... We've finished filming," Chung said. "The martial-arts aspect of the character [is the same as the Samurai Girl character Heaven], but Heaven is something real special. ... Chi Chi was a fun character to play, and ... it's also a very strong young female, but Heaven has a completely different [backstory] behind her that makes things so much more interesting."

No Dragonball Trailer with Space Chimps or The Dark Knight

July 17, 2008

There were some rumors that the Dragonball trailer may release with the Fox film Space Chimps.  Live Action Anime can now confirm, via a very reliable source, that there is no Dragonball trailer showing with Space Chimps or The Dark Knight.

So it doesn't seem we'll be seeing one this week.  And unless it's with another company the remaining likely summer Fox Films for the trailer to debut with are;  X-Files (June 25), The Rocker (August 20th), and Babylon A.D. (August 29).

Other than that we probably won't see one until Fall or Winter.   Purely speculating, if it were a winter released trailer my best guess would be The Day The Earth Stood Still (December 12).

What's your guess?  Discuss on our Forums!

New Michael Bay Interview

July 17, 2008

Micheal Bay, director of Transformers recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk about his upcoming projects, including Transformers:  Revenge of the Fallen.  While he didn't say much on the movie itself, he did grace us with at least a little commentary:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What can you tell us about Transformers 2? Or, better yet, what will you tell us?
MICHAEL BAY: When we were writing the script, I said to the writers, "I hate sequels that try to make it to the third movie. Pretend like we’re never having a third movie, so let’s go for broke on the second one. I hate those cliffhangers! Let’s just make this movie stand on its own." I really feel this movie is not a forced sequel. I think the script is really good, and I think it’s got a lot of new stuff in it. There are a lot of rumors out there, but we’ve released a lot of fake stuff. We’ve done a really good job of keeping things secret.

Can you give us a hint of something that is true then?

[Laughs] No.

C'mon, anything?
There are some great, new robots that are really inventive.

Justin Chatwin in Playboy!

July 16, 2008

Sorry for getting this up a little late everyone, we get busy on other things over here from time to time.  But, if you haven't seen it yet there was a new magazine scan found of Justin Chatwin as Goku.

This comes from Dukemon from DBMB Apparently it's a scan from Playboy magazine??  Check it out below.  Click the pic to see the hi-res.  Also courtesy of Dragonballfilm.es we've got a picture with no words and a rough translation.  We'll start you off with the translation:

The premiere of the film with real actors of Dragonball is determined. The Kamehameha will be released across Japan on March 13, 2009. “This film is the story of a teenage boy, and I love Goku” said Chatwin. Chow Yun Fat is the master Roshi. What will happen to the scene funny “Pafu-Pafu”?
Emmy Rossum is BULMA. She mounted on motorcycles quite cool.

Now the film is real Dragonball in production in Hollywood, its official release date is determined. On Friday the March 13, 2009 the film will be premiered in Japan ahead of the rest of the world.

Suffice it to say that Dragonball is the great masterpiece of manga Akira Toriyama. It has sold over 300 million copies around the world so far and is still sold. In this movie, and hopeful young actor Justin Chatwin, Hollywood, plays the role of the star Goku. Talking about their favorite scenes, “I think we are the scenes of action. They (producers) are filled with many scenes very ambitious than ever seen before. The Kamehameha is also very provocative. “

The brilliant actress Emmy Rossum plays BULMA, who travels with Goku. “The Emperor of Asian cinema” Chow Yun-Fat interprets the teacher Roshi. James Marsters to Piccolo. And the Japanese world-class actress in Hollywood actively Eriko Tamura makes Mai. Although much of this film still remains secret, here are four images extraneous Shuupure (Weekly Playboy) succeeded in secret. How will Goku aimpedir that the ambitious Piccolo destroy the world? The next March, his secret will be revealed.

More Translations from Jump SQ

July 13, 2008

DBtheMovie has gotten more translations of this month's issue of Jump SQ (See July 4th).  We get to heat a little bit more on character descriptions here:

"Justin Chatwin (Goku) appeared in front of them. Goku had blue eyes. The author of this manga (Akiba Zaijuu) felt Justin has a boyish nature, as well as Goku. He was wearing the blue gi, not orange. Justin said “My gi with Kame mark (orange gi) is still in the making. I’m looking forward to see how it will be made. I hope it will become what you all like.”

The author remembered he saw and talk with Mayes Rubeo (costume designer) before. She said “I kept trying for the children of the little village I grew up won’t be disappointed with it. I made more than thirty prototypes for only Goku’s gi.” She seemed to be ambitious and having fun, so he felt she sure can make a good costume. And about Justin, his blue gi was cool, but not only the costume design, but his buffed up muscle enhanced his look. Because he has been training for seven months for Goku’s role. The author remembered Goku also have trained for eight months under Master Roshi when Goku was a child in the original. Coincidence?

When the Japanese magazine press interviewed Justin, suddenly the tank top man came into the room. He shouted “Omochi!(rice cake)” in Japanese. He tried to eat Kusa-dango of Asakusa Tokyo (it was souvenir from Japan) there but he accidentally dropped it on the ground and it got dirty with sand. But he didn’t care, he picked it up and ate it. He was a very wild man. The author wondered who he was.

Next Emmy Rossum’s interview. She said her active and cheerful character resembled Bulma. She’s a brilliant young actress and also a good singer.  Bulma’s hair is not all blue, but have blue streaks. Make-up artist Mr. Gomez told us the reason that all blue hair is too strong as a live-action, so he was requested not to do that. So he proposed sixteen hairstyle and make-up designs which kept the image of the original, but they were all turned down.

After that time he came up with the present hairstyle and make-up. Emmy said, “Did you look at the three-wheeled motorcycle? There are two same motorcycles and they promise I will get one of them after the filming. Other one may be gotten by someone here!” they asked her what her favorite Mexican food was and she said “Gorditas! I like Gorditas.”

Piccolo "Spoiler"; Possible DragonBall Teaser Clip

July 12, 2008

Dragonball Film has gotten their hands on another piece of information concerning the movie.  This time, we learn about what kind of powers Piccolo is supposed to possess in the film:

"I think everybody remembers how is born Piccolo.  Kami-Sama has seperated the devil part of himself, and created a sort of evil clone:  Piccolo.  So in the movie, Piccolo will have quite a similar power.  According to Cloud, Piccolo will be able to reveal the dark side of anybody, and to create an evil clone of the people."

So what does this mean?  Evil versions of Goku and the gang?  Will Kami still be involved in all this?  This raises even more questions if true.  The source of the information is supposed to have a revelation as well on Goku in the coming days.

Also, a short clip of what appears to be a teaser is floating around.  Check it out and judge for yourself HERE.  Don't forget, you can discuss all this new information over on our Forums.

Jose Fernandez Talks DragonBall

July 8, 2008

Looks like yet another member of the cast and crew of the DragonBall film has spoken.  This time, DBMB got ahold of Jose Fernandez, the founder of Ironhead Studios who is the company doing the effects for the film:

DBMB: How did you get involved with Dragonball? Was there some sort of “auditioning” process or where you approached by Fox/James Wong?

JF: I was approached by Fox. I”ve done a handful of films for them, so we have a bit of a relationship.

DBMB: What characters did you work on in this film?

JF: In the early design phase I worked on almost, if not every character. After the initial drawings, the director and studio chose what they did and didn’t want to use. As far as final design and fabrication, I was responsible for Piccolo’s full costume and armor, everything except for his makeup, which ADI was responsible for. I also assisted Mayes Rubeo with realizing Goku’s costume and gi.

DBMB: What was it like working with the cast and crew?
JF: Other than James Marsters, I had little contact with the cast. I was only on set for a couple of days to make sure that the costumes were maintained, and looked the best they could on film.

DBMB: What was James Wong like as a director?
JF: I didn’t have the pleasure of working with James in depth. We met in a few preliminary meetings and e-mailed a few times. He seemed very focused and open to creative ideas.

DBMB: What was James Wong looking for in terms of character design?
JF: Well, James seemed to have a healthy respect for the source material. He wanted to create a memorable world that satisfied fans, but also was grounded in reality.

"New" Concept Art for Transformers

What would you say if you found out that an aircraft carrier was to make an appearance in the first Transformers movie?  Well now's the time to figure that out, as it was actually a reality.  Seems that this particular Transformer didn't make it into the first movie, but according to Michael Bay it could make an appearnce in the sequel.  Then again, we all know about the disinformation he's been putting out.  Anyways, here's a look at some of the concept art by Tim Flattery.  To see more, just click on the picture:

James Marsters on DragonBall

July 7, 2008

DBTheMovie was able to translate the Jump Square interview with James Marsters on his role as Piccolo, and the Dragonball movie in general. Check it out below.

What is the difference between the original and the live-action movie ?

JM: Definitely the story of this movie is different from the original. But it’s a necessary change because we need to condense the long story of the original for a movie. For example, some characters in the original don’t appear in the movie. And we try to give it a more gritty and graphic (realistic) feeling.

Though there are differences between the two, I think it is all right if the core part of Dragonball remains. I let my son watch the anime’s Dragonball, DBZ and DBGT since he was eight years old. At first, I thought it was too violent, but I realized this is the best show for training to become a true man. True men need not to flaunt themselves. Their calm, gentle and modest but when it comes to the crunch they don’t hesitate to kill the enemy, and I think that’s what Goku is.

Goku is a real man. I know my son received such a message and applied it to his own life. My son doesn’t use violence to others, but he isn’t afraid of his own anger. I think it’s an important thing.

How many hours does it take to apply the make-up?

JM: It takes about four hours. Luckily, my make-up artist is very chatty, we have a lot of chat during the make up.

Please tell us the most remarkable scene in the movie, especially action scenes!

JM: It is the last battle after all! I like playing the battle scene. When I worked for a TV show for seven years, every Friday I fought till sun rise, I felt I would never have such a good time again until now. In addition, I have never gotten terribly hurt (laugh).

Do you talk with other co-stars as well?

JM: When I have a problem, I have a talk with Justin [Chatwin]. At first, we worried about the costumes. We thought it should reflect the spirit of the original, we persisted this through to the producers. We didn’t want to make our characters beautiful and safe. I talked with Justin, and he agreed with me. So did the director.

What do you care about in acting for this movie?

JM: That’s a good question. Speaking of Piccolo, one word comes into my mind, it’s “loneliness”. Piccolo is always floating in the air in the beautiful landscape, but he never even admires the landscape, he is only thinking or musing and staring at his feet. I think that is a characteristic of piccolo more than anything else.

Maybe it must be a characteristic for revenge. He hates himself and blames the people who has trapped him. His desire to kill not only them but their family, furthermore to destroy the city and the planet they live and protect. To get revenge is everything to him. Everything.

How was shooting in Durango?

JM: The desert of Durango is very cold at night (laugh). I was luckily wearing armor, but Goku was freezing at the beginning of shooting. The local people are very kind and get along with us. Besides they love to party very much! If I didn’t have work, I would be willing to join them. They are drinking and singing songs until 4:30 a.m. But I need to sleep for the shooting the next day, after all so I changed the hotel to get away from the partying people.

Finally, please give us a message to our readers in Japan.

JM: Japan is beautiful. Thank you for giving Dragonball to us! It’s an important show to us all and I want you to watch it, especially the young people. I thank the show for a lot of good times with my son. I’ll do my best to meet the high expectations the fans have.

Lots of DragonBall movie info has been making its way around lately. DragonBall Film got in contact with Ben Ransey, who ahd to say this about the leaked script from a few months back:

"I haven't read the leaked script so I don't know if it was one of my drafts or not.  Plus I am not at liberty to comment on it one way or the other.

I have not seen the whole film yet but what I've seen looks incredible. It was an absolute honor to be a part of Dragonball history.  I am a big fan of James Wong's work and I am confident that he made a movie that will thrill die-hard fans and non-fnas alike.

I'd like to thank all the fans for their support and for helping to promote the movie.  With your help Goku, Roshi, Bulma, Yamcha, Chi Chi and Piccolo will rule the Universe in 2009.

Kamehameha!

Ben"

Also, Casey Hotchkiss who is the camera operator on the film left DragonBall Film a comment saying:  "Working on DragonBall was a great experience.  Jim Wong is incredible.  He knows what he wants and won't quit until he gets his shots."

And also, DragonBall Live was able to get an interview with the story board artist, Dan Fraga:

Did you inform yourself and get inspiration on the anime to create your story board ? Were you inspired by Akira Toriyama's style ?

Before being asked to work on Dragon Ball, I was already a fan of the Anime. I had maybe around 20 issues of the manga, but it was in Japanese, so I really could only look at the pictures. The first time I had ever heard of Dragon Ball was in 1993 when a fellow comic book artist showed me the Anime on a VHS tape. It was a bootleg from Japan. What inspired me most about Dragon Ball Z was the level of energy and dynamics that was put into the action sequences. If anything, that's what I tried to bring with me to my work on the film.

A lot of rumours are saying that the film will be a PG, Will it definately be a PG and not a PG 13 ? or even an R rated movie ? In our opinion an PG13 or R rated movie is more appropriate for the dragon ball universe ?

While I can't comment on the Rating of the Dragon Ball film, I will comment on that I'd personally prefer an R rating. My first job on a film was on The Transporter 2. Originally, we filmed an R rated movie, and unfortunately, Luc and Fox wanted more "butts in seats" so it was brought down to PG-13. I really feel that the film suffered because of it. As far as Dragon Ball is concerned, I think that Jim directed an incredible film. I'm sure if his intended cut makes it to the screen, you'll be happy.

You can read the rest of the interview at the link above.  So that's a lot of news, which means that's a lot to talk about.  So head on over to our Forums to discuss it all.

DragonBall Trailer This Month?

July 1, 2008

In a world of uncertainty and confusion, Fox's Christina Inman adds even more to the confusion.  Or has cleared it up.  One of the two.  We've heard reports that the trailer for DragonBall would appear from as soon as this past month, to as late as this year's holiday season. However, rumors started spreading that a short teaser was shown at the Cinema Expo in Amsterdam a few weeks ago.  It turns out this information was true.

A member over on DBtheMovie recieved an e-mail from Inman in which she states, "A small teaser with a few scenes of the film was shown at Cinema Expo 2008, So maybe the beginning of next month or at the end of this you might see one [a trailer] soon..."

So there you have it.  The upcoming "Space Chimps" or "X-Files" movie could be a possibility for this teaser to be attached to as their release dates are July 18th.  Time will tell though, and we'll keep you posted as more information surfaces.  Don't forget to discuss these new developments over on our Forums.
