LAA EXCLUSIVE: Interview with Dragonball's Shavon Kirksey!

August 31, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

n

Recently I had the pleasure of speaking with Shavon Kirksey, whom you all may know is playing the character of Emi in the upcoming live action Dragonball movie. I asked her a few questions about her character and her experiences on the movie. Here's a quick snippet:

LAA: How did you get involved with Dragonball? Was there an audition process or were you called in?

Shavon: Yes, I got a call from my agency telling me to check my email because I have an audition for the Dragonball live action movie. So first I read on tape with the casting director, John Papsidera, then went to callbacks. The very next day my agent and manager called me telling me I booked it and that I am leaving for Mexico soon! I was so excited!! This is my first role in a film and I got to film out of the country! How fun is that?

LAA: Sounds like a lot! In the movie you play a character named Emi. Fans have been curious about this character as she is new to the Dragonball universe. What can you tell us about her role in the film and about her character in general?

Shavon: Well, my character was made up for the film. Emi and Chi Chi are best friends in the movie. We are the “it” girls on our high school campus, and we only like to hang out with other popular kids and the football players, so we can maintain our popular image. Everyone wants to be in our circle but emi wont allow it unless she thinks your cool enough [laughs]. But emi is a cool down to earth girl and she’s very smart, but she just wants everyone to see her as the perfect popular girl.

And the director of Voltron is...

August 28, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

Max Makowski?

Apparently so. LatinoReview's El Mayimbe broke the news:

"I’m told he's on every studio's hot list these days because of some Sundance movie he made a few years ago about warring assassins called ONE LAST DANCE. I was also told it's like having Zach Snyder do 300. Max is supposed to have a great visual style that's very specific and all his own."

He's also directing the remake of Kung Fu!

Check out the Live Action Kodomo no Kodomo trailer

August 28, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

Ran across this trailer today on cinemacafe.net. It's the live action Kodomo no Kodomo (Child of a Child).   Unfortunately the trailer is not subtitled and it's in Japanese.  So while some of us might not know what they're saying, the cinematography is very nice to look at.

Check it out here!

The film is adapted from the Japanese manga of the same name.  It's about an 11-year-old girl named Haruna who becomes unexpectedly pregnant.  You might recognize the similarity in theme to the recent American film Juno. While Juno dealt with a 16 year old pregrency, the idea of an 11 year old girl being pregnant seems a little more... shocking.  And probably isn't a topic seen too often.  Which might just make the film that much more interesting.

It release in Japanese theaters on September 27th.  Hopefully we'll get the dvd here in the states.

Bob Orci Answers Question on Transformers and Casting On AFB

August 25, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

Over at TFW2005, Bob Orci (screenwriter) has been answering lots of questions from fans regarding the upcoming movie.   Here's some of the questions.

Q. Will Optimus have a trailer in this film, and will it transform? Will we see Roller, and if so, is it apart of Prime like his profile states or a separate being? Will Roller have a robot form?

A. We've talked about the trailer many times. I can say nothing more than that.

Q. Will these alien robots, the evil ones in particular, get some color variation? All/mostly silver/grey made it difficult to tell who was who the first time watching the film at times, so color or a glowing purple insignia would be nice.

A. Yes

There's more questions and answers but they're kind of spread about the thread. CLICK HERE to go directly to the page where I got these questions from.  From there you can search about.

If you find anything cool let us know on our Transfomers forum!

Also in Transformers news, the AirForceTimes tells us that a casting call took place on Holloman Air Force Base last week for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

"Parts of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” are set to be filmed in Alamogordo, N.M., home to Holloman. Scenes from the first “Transformers” were shot at Holloman in 2006 and featured aircraft such as the CV-22 Osprey and MH-53 Pave Low.

"About 200 people will be hired as extras to portray military members,” Maryellen Aviano, extras casting coordinator for DreamWorks Pictures, said in an Air Force news release."

20th Century Boys Premiere in Paris

August 23, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

Paris hosted the world premiere for the live-action 20th Century Boys on Tuesday evening.  The film is the first in a trilogy adapted from Naoki Urasawa's suspense manga of the same name.

Two of the castmembers, Toshiaki Karasawa(Casshern's Brayking Boss)[right] and Takako Tokiwa (Brave Story's Cutts)[left], held a press conference in front of the Mona Lisa painting in the Louvre Museum, with 400 people watched the sold-out screening. 200 people reportedly stood in the standby-ticket line, including one male student who waited seven hours.

5

Karasawa's character Kenji learns that mysterious deaths and calamities around the world are connected to idle plans he and his childhood friends made decades ago.

Over 20 million copies of the manga's 22 volumes have been published in 12 countries. Viz Media announced at Comic-Con International this month that it will release the original manga in North America starting next February. The first film will open in Japan on August 30 and then travel overseas to 20 regions in Asia and Europe.

Roadshow Magazine Translation for DragonBall Movie

August 22, 2008

By: Son Goshin

The October issue of Roadshow Magazine in Japan included some interviews of Justin Chatwin and 7 Eleven Studios, who are coordinating the stunts for the Dragon Ball live action movie.  DBtheMovie  was able to get a translation of the interviews:

Justin Chatwin:
"First of all, it’s an honor to play Goku, because he is a very important and epic character. He is always seeing the positive side of things, does good things, and always trys to help and take care of the weak, not only pursuing his power. He is a dependable and loving man as well as a boy. So I like Goku.

"In preparation for the role, of course I read the original manga (all of it), in addition, I read Monkey King a little, because DragonBall is based on Monkey King. And during the break time of shooting, I got into Goku’s character, telling jokes with other cast in search of the real communication which can be used in acting.

"Highlights of this movie are the action scenes, and amazing visual effects will be made at post production, so I’m looking forward to see it. About Kamehameha I only can imagine it now. I’m so excited. And this movie is the coming-of-age story about a boy, though this is set in a sci-fi world, in my opinion, my best scene is the moment when the characters who got together for the same purpose relate to each other."

Voltron Update!

August 18, 2008

By: LiveActionVegeta

LatinoReview is reporting, per The Trades, that a Voltron movie might finally start rolling toward the production line.

"Fox-based New Regency has put robot project "Voltron: Defender of the Universe" into turnaround.

Ryan Kavanaugh's financing and production venture Relativity Media is in negotiations to back the property, though on a more moderate budget, utilizing the type of cost-effective technology employed in films including "300."

The Mark Gordon Co. still is attached to produce "Voltron," which is based on the popular Japanese animated TV series of the 1980s.

Mark Gordon and Jordan Wynn are producers. Bryan Zuriff is exec producing. Producers expect to attach a director within the next week.

Relativity would finance and produce the project as part of its one-off picture business and shop it to distributors. In the past, Relativity films have been released by Lionsgate ("3:10 to Yuma") and Universal ("Mr. Brooks")."

Last summer, New Regency picked up the rights to the property, adapted by scribe Justin Marks, who's behind Warner Bros.' bigscreen versions of "He-Man" and "Green Arrow."

Marks' take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico, where five survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth's invaders.

Technically, New Regency never had the rights to the project, insiders close to the project said. The shingle couldn't wrap up a deal with "Voltron's" Japanese rights holders, delaying any further development of the pic.

Talks for "Voltron" were under way before DreamWorks and Paramount successfully launched "Transformers," but Hollywood's interest in robot pics based on popular toys or toons grew after "Transformers" hit it big at the B.O., with Warner Bros. snatching up the rights to "Robotech."

Some may or may not remember that back in 2007 El Mayimbe from Latino Review got his hands on Justin Marks' Voltron script for a review.  In which he gave it an A+!    So if you're curious about what this Voltron movie might entail then I would suggest heading HERE to read it.

DragonBall the Movie in Paperback

August 14, 2008

By: Son Goshin

Yes you read the headline correctly.  The live action DragonBall film will be adapted to a children's paperback book, as is common with many feature films nowadays.

5

You can see it on bookshelves, or preorder now, for a February 3rd release.  But what really makes this newsworthy is the synopsis found on Amazon:

"Read the story based on the hit action film from 20th Century Fox!

Collect all seven Dragon Balls and you can wish for whatever you want!

"Goku thought he was a normal high school student until he found out he's actually a martial-arts whiz with all kinds of crazy powers. Now he and his new group of teen warriors are on a quest to find all the Dragon Balls before they fall into the wrong hands. But they may already have! Goku must battle the evil madman Piccolo with all he's got to save the planet Earth!"

Quite an interesting description, even if the book is aimed for a younger audience.  You can discuss this over on our Forum.

LAA Podcast #8

August 12, 2008

By: Son Goshin

At long last, the 8th episode of the LAA Podcast is up!  Now this is not the coverage from Otakon, this podcast was recorded last Sunday, so sorry for the delay.

We're a man down in this episode with Vegeta unable to make it this time around, but back once again is special guest Kuhan! We talk about the recent formation of Viz Productions and discuss the possible creation of movies such as Bleach and Naruto. We also get into the big announcement of Cowboy Bebop coming to the big screen, as well as the pair of Jamie Chung interviews on DragonBall. So check it out here or just head on over to ITunes and check it out there.

Unfortuantely though, a few things went wrong with recording at Otakon and we were not able to record anything.  However, we'll discuss Otakon in the next podcast as well as all the news we've gotten during that time.

Look for episode 9 this weekend. But for now, enjoy episode 8 right HERE.

Otakon 2008 Report!

August 11, 2008

By: Son Goshin

So, LAA is back from Otakon 2008 in Baltimore, Maryland.  And was it a blast!  There were plenty of awesome people up there, cosplayers, guests, artists, even members from here!  The weekend had many highs, and practically no lows what so ever.  While we didn't get to record any interviews with guests or attendees this weekend, we did get to speak with some of the guests.

100_0230.jpg picture by Goshin87

100_0234.jpg picture by Goshin87

Peter Fernandez, the original voice of Speed Racer from the anime, talked to us for a bit on what he thought of the recent live action movie.  He said he enjoyed the story, but the races were much too fast for him and he couldn't keep up.

Laura Bailey, known for doing the voice of kid Chi-Chi and Chibi Trunks talked for a good while with us as well while signing autographs.  She has hope for the live action movie and is looking forward to it, but she doesn't seem too hot on the idea of Jamie Chung playing Chi-Chi in the live action adaptation.

Hironobou Kageyama, who is most famously known for lending his voice to the anime themes for DragonBall Z, made an appearance with JAM Project. While we didn't get to speak personally with him, I was able to get third row at the band's amazing concert.  Hearing Kageyama sing "Cha-La-Head-Cha-La" was one of the best moments of the entire convention.

We also took part in a DBZ Cosplay Photoshoot as you can see in the picture above.  We had a good contingent from LAA there and it was great to see and hang out with everyone!  Check out the Cosplay and Convention board for more information on what happened in Baltimore, as well as more pictures, here!

Happy 5th Anniversary!

August 6, 2008

By: Son Goshin

That's right, today marks the 5th anniversary of our web community here at LAA!  Can you believe it, 5 YEARS!  Although the site itself is only a little over 2 years old, the web community here has been thriving for much longer.

66

From humble beginnings over on the Unofficial DBZ Live Action Movie Forums, we brought the rumors and facts to the table at a time when there was much speculation going on about the DragonBall movie, at a time when we were the only place for all things DragonBall after the ownfall of Chainsaw Zombie's site.

We sat through Mr. Z and many other pretenders, but all that waiting finally paid off with the DragonBall movie coming out this coming spring.  That shows how dedicated our community is, we've been together for 5 years, and welcomed many new people into the fold.  And we've become a community in the truest sense with many people meeting up with each other at conventions and various other events, and even some love has been found here!

We hope to enjoy another 5 years and continue bringing up to the minute news on not only DragonBall, but all anime live action while keeping a strong sense of community where everyone is welcome.  So make sure to head on over to the Forums and join in on the big 5th anniversary celebration!  All this week you'll be seeing some classic banners up, and maybe even some retro skins later as well!  So I personally thank you, the members, for keeping this place going for so long.  It wouldn't be here with out all of you, and each of you makes this place what it is today.

Variety reports that Paramount and Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B, have aquired the rights to the four volume manga series, "Miki Falls."

Created by Mark Crilley, the story chronicles the final year of high school for Miki Yoshida who tries to befriend handsome new student Hiro Sakurai but is met with resistance. Stubborn Miki, however, refuses to take no for an answer, which leads to a surprising revelation about the secretive young man.

Television writer Sera Gamble (Supernatural) has been hired to pen the adaptation.

More Live Action Afro Samurai Talk!

August 6, 2008

By: Vegeta

Back when Afro Samurai debuted on television there was some rustle and bustle around the net of a possible live action adaptation. Even the Sam-Man himself had hinted to it. Well recently Sam Jackson had an interview with MTV Movie Blogs about just this subject. Here's what he had to say.

"We have a live-action plan,” Jackson revealed, saying that he wants to see Afro’s battle with Number One up on the big screen with flesh-and-blood actors. “Hopefully, that script will come together and we’ll be able to do that in the next two years or so.”

When asked if he'd take on the role himself, since he voices the character in the series, he had this to say:

"No, I’m not; I won’t be doing that,” he shrugged. “I’ll be the dead father. I’ll show up in some spiritual scenes, and give him some guidance. We’ll find some young guy that is capable of doing all those things and make it really cool.”  MTV when on to ask who he'd like to see in the role.  “You know, when I look at him, I see Andre 3000,” Jackson grinned. “So, maybe so.”

For those that don't know Andre 3000, whose real name is Andre Benjamin, is one member of the group Outkast.  He's also acted in several films including Four Brothers.

Megatron to Return... as a Tank?

August 4, 2008

By: Son Goshin

CHUD recently posted some new information on the upcoming Transformers sequel.  Of course, Megatron seems to be making his return, but this time, as a tank?

"Megatron may be getting brought back by the Autobots, who need him to conquer the new menace (The Fallen). But I've learned that this time he won't be that weird alien jet. This time he's a tank.

Megatron apparently was a tank in the Transformers Generation 2 comic or toys or something, so this has some precedent."

New Jamie Chung Interview on DragonBall

August 1, 2008

By: Son Goshin

Apparently Jamie Chung had more to say on DragonBall at the recent Comic Con, as IGN recently posted a video interview with her, which you can view HERE.  Probably what's most interesting in this interview is that towards the end she mentions, "They don't show my dad, but maybe we'll save that for DragonBall Z."  So it would appear that there will be no Ox King in the movie.
