Mark Your Calender. August 21st is Avatar day. The Other One.

August 21, 2009 will be a day that those of us that are fortunate enough to have an IMAX near them, will want to request off work.

During his presentation at Comic Con James Cameron announced that for one day only 20th Century Fox (please hold your boos until the announcement is over) will be taking over “as many” IMAX and Digital 3D theaters as they can to screen 15 minutes of footage from James Cameron’s Avatar.

Oh yeah and it’s completely FREE!!

Now this is not to be confused with M. Nigh Shyamalan’s film “The Last Airbender” based on the television show Avatar. This is a whole other beast.

For those not familiar with this film it is about a band of humans that are pitted in a battle against a distant planet’s indigenous population.

The film has been in the works for many years.  It is because of this film and James Cameron that your local theaters have been pushed to switch to digital projectors.  Many praise this movie to be “the next big thing” in filmmaking. James Cameron has said he doesn’t think it will revolutionize the industry but it’s apparently unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.  New equipment and technology was invented specifically to make this movie.

I suppose in the end we’ll see if it all lives up to the hype.  I think this is a great marketing idea for the film and if Fox is willing to foot the bill to rent out all these theaters to show 15 minutes then they must know they have something special.  Who knows maybe this will be the next big thing from Fox since Star Wars?  Now with this new technology lets see if they can just make a good Dragonball movie.  But I’d hold off on that for a few more years as Evolution still has a bad taste lingering in the air.
