Dragonball: Evolution opens at #8
Well the numbers are in and unfortunately it doesn’t look good for the live action adaptation of Dragonball. Pulling in a dismal weekend box office of only $4.65 million, it claims the number 8 spot for Easter weekend. The complete weekend box office stats are below.
Via: Box Office Mojo
1 Hannah Montana The Movie BV $34,000,000
2 Fast and Furious Uni. $28,783,000
3 Monsters Vs. Aliens P/DW $22,617,000
4 Observe and Report WB $11,140,000
5 Knowing Sum. $6,670,000
6 I Love You, Man P/DW $6,412,000
7 The Haunting in Connecticut LGF $5,710,000
8 Dragonball Evolution Fox $4,650,000
9 Adventureland Mira. $3,433,000
10 Duplicity Uni. $2,997,000
This doesn’t bode well for anyone hoping to see a sequel to the movie, as Dragonball even falls below the opening weekend box office of the other recent LAA from Fox, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, which had a slightly better $4.7 million opening weekend and was released in a little over 1000 theaters less than Dragonball: Evolution was.
Of course there is still a little time to catch up. This article is posted Sunday night, so perhaps there will be rush to the theater and Dragonball will make the extra $71,000 it needs to beat Chun Li. Unfortunately it won’t change it’s spot as it’s not likely it’ll make enough to move up any.
Tune in soon for the next LAA podcast that will be dedicated to talking about Dragonball: Evolution. It’ll be an episode you won’t wanna miss!!

By the way I found this video on youtube. To me I look at it and it seems to be a good metaphor for Dragonball: Evolution’s journey to theaters. Of course this is just my opinion. By the way don’t subscribe to that person’s account. They ask you too at the end, but just because I’m not a nice person I say don’t do it.
UPDATE: Opening weekend totals brought in $4,756,488. Bringing up World Wide to $30,071,834

This movie is not what fans had in mind when we first knew that dbz is going to be live action.
I’m sad and disappointed.
its bad, but it will make back its budget by international box office, so far internationally its doing good. a total of 42 mill so far with a budget of 50 mill.
the problem was fox didn’t promote the movie at all. I think fox was pulling more for an international performance.
Actually the international box office (including U.S) is $29 million.

sadly a sequel was already green-lit thanx to the international box office
I can’t find that confirmed anywhere. Fox would be complete idiots to make a sequel when they haven’t even replenished their budget yet.
Aside from the horrible timing of the release with rivaling other big movies, many fans knew of how bad it’d be, so they watched it online. And this can be thanked to not opening the movie in all locations on one date.
And then there are the non-fans who were bored one night and decided to pick Dragonball as their free movie for the evening…
Honestly, I know a lot of people want a good sequel. They want the beloved characters put back in of whom were missing, they want a bigger budget.. they just want it to be better. But even if they have $50 million lying around (which would complete the rumored $100 million budget), how could they fix everything in one movie with the same wimpy budget.. especially if they already have a sequel written that probably will be similar to the first?
I do not think it’s possible. That is my opinion. I want a reboot or no sequel.
To be quite frank with you, if there WAS a sequel, I will watch it online. Quite simply as that, because I don’t believe that sort of acting and story quality deserves my $10.
Sad. Truly Sad. I think this film will be revoluntionary, regardless of the money it makes, just for the fact that it’s the first live action anime in America that is sort of mainstream. After this, all the others will come out. Let’s hope they fare better than DBE, but this movie was the crack that broke the dam.
i thought this movie only spent $15 million on production.
doesn’t that mean they made more money than they spent?? well anyway, this movie sucked. i’m not going to lie. it didn’t bring up and of my expectations. making this movie, the producers said would help bring a new generation of dragonball. to me, it looks like dragonball’s fame is decreasing. When i went to go see it at the theaters, there were only six people there.(including me and my brother) This movie sucked badly. the special effects were lame. They also used alot of cheesy green screen. it literally looked like a poster was behind them. It made it seem like a bunch of college students made the movie. i wouldn’t recomend this movie to anyone. i should have seen hannah montana. my rating is *1/2.
rainyfriday: “just for the fact that it’s the first live action anime in America that is sort of mainstream.”
You forgot about Speed Racer.
I think it is funny that so many people put down the movie. I actually thought it was pretty good, and so did my wife. I really hope for a sequel. Only thing I ask is for a little more time for story development (if they follow some of the original anime) or to totally change the story if they decide to keep it short.
And I can’t believe fans would take away from the franchise by downloading only and not paying to see in theaters upon release. I guess a lot of fans are just so use to downloading their anime illegally, that they feel like it is okay to do it for the live action films also. (guess what, they are both illegal)
The worldwide box office numbers are actually about 47 million right now. I read it in an article on DragonballMovieForum.com
BoxOfficeMojo just hasn’t updated their overseas numbers yet
@The Live Action Vegeta
That I did, mate. That I did.
Sorry for the double post, but doesn’t Fox get royalties for toys and merchandises too. If so, than for sure they’re going to make more than enough to get a sequel, even if they bomb at theaters.
According to Anime News Network, as of yesterday, they also listed the worldwide box office as $25,315,346.
As of today, Box Office Mojo has recorded a total of $30,071,834.
Just as a point, I do not trust DragonballmovieForum.com just because it Jappo’s site. I’d like to see actual sources from established websites and companies with official reports.
You guys should do another podcast with Jappo.
its actually 37 million and 4.7 mill Us so about 42 million worldwide

Jappo site is absolutely wrong.
I didn’t get it from his site. There was a link on the forum to a very reputable site (i think it was Variety) that said the worldwide total as of right now is 42-47 million.
Also, if you look at BoxOfficeMojo, their foreign total isn’t updated. It says 25,315,346 as of April 5th. It opened in like 10 countries this past week, earning about 10-15 million in those countries (total). They haven’t updated their foreign total for this past week.
@Live Action Vegeta:
Speed Racer wasn’t really an adaptation, because it had an original story, therefore not adapting it to the screen.
Randy-
The last update on BOM states $30,071,834. I’m sure it might have gotten a few thousand more by now though since it’s been a couple of days.
I do see what you are saying, how it doesn’t add up. They only changed the total including domestic. Even still, the total gross was updated.
I know, but the FOREIGN total hasn’t been updated yet. They are likely updating it this afternoon. I’ll even find the article where it said the foreign total was 42 million.
Sorry if I sound like a douche.
I hope that the sequel will make a bunch of money when it comes out and I will be happy.
Why hasn’t my other comment been moderated yet? All it had was a link and a quote from the link proving my point.
Here is what it said:
“Fox’s “Dragonball: Evolution,” managed only No. 8 in its domestic debut, grossing an estimated $4.7 million from 2,181 theaters. Studio had limited expectations for the film, which was narrowly targeted to boys.
Fantasy adventure saw more business overseas, grossing $10.6 million at 4,500 in 35 markets for a foreign cume of $37 million, led by China with $8.4 million. (Pic opened abroad first.) Weekend tally was led by Spain at $2 million and Italy at $1.3 million. Worldwide cume is $41.7 million.”
and this was taken from VARIETY
If they only followed the original story, they wouldn’t have any problems about having plot holes. It lacks so many things.
They fooled many moviegoers and managed to still earn a bit. What a trick.
