Cowboy Bebop LAM went ahead thanks to Keanu Reeves.

Kenji Uchida, the president of Sunrise animation studio, told attendees of Tokyo International Anime fair that Keanu Reeves had visited Japan twice to express his interest in adapting Cowboy Bebop into a live action film. Allegedly, it was largely thanks to Reeves’ enthusiasm that the deal went ahead at all.

The saviour of the Cowboy Bebop movie?

The saviour of the Cowboy Bebop movie?

Uchida further stated that the negotiations with 20th Century Fox had gone on for two years until a mutually acceptable contract was reached. Sunrise retains the right to assert quality control and veto any script that comes their way – “If the script is terrible, the live action film adaptation will not be approved”.

Whatever we think of his suitability for the role, it seems those of us looking for a live-action Cowboy Bebop have a lot to thank Reeves for. That Sunrise retain the right to approve the script also says good things for the movie’s faith to the source material. For this adaptation, things certainly seem to be looking up.

  4. Now I love Keanu Reeves… he certainly did me a very big favor. XD

Ah… at least Sunrise is screening the script. That at least tells me the movie will have an awesome plot. ^.^

    CAN’T WAIT!

even if i love origin stories and how everthing started!

  6. WOOT!!! Now all we need is high school scene….
I HOPE THE BABES IN THIS MOVIE ARE HOT!!!!
I know its kinda wrong, but I hope Ed ends up hot too!!!!

  7. “I know its kinda wrong, but I hope Ed ends up hot too!!!!”

    Please don’t disturb me. -.-’

  8. It took me a while to pull my faith off of the street of future disapointment. His enthusiasm and that image make me feel better about the live incarnation of one of my favorites.

  9. Okay, some of his movies are good, and it is thanks to him, but I forsee that his acting will kill the movie, or not make it out to be as great at the animated series. No offence. He’s just too serious for the part. Spike is smug, hilariously sarcastic and somewhat cheerful to an extent but keanue is just…….bland. This is my opinion only so don’t get mad or anal. Anyways we’ll just have to see. Hopefully I’ll come out to be wrong but yeah.

  10. Id love to see this as a live action as long as they dont screw it up.

Oh and please…. please dear god dont let Keanu have a role in the film. I dont want to have to shoot myself.

  11. Well according to the latest anime insider, ed is being played by Vin Deisel

  12. Anyone apart from Keanu Reeves please. Listening to his whiny voice in the Matrix made me want to stick forks in my eyes

  13. I completely agree with Freeman and Val. Reeves will KILL THIS MOVIE! Who wants to see a scarecrow play Spike, one of the most beloved characters in anime fandom? Sure as heck not me! I’m glad that he’s enthused for the project, but SPIKE?! Argh…

  14. i think im having doubts about a cowboy bebop live action i think is going to be horrible of it does come out but if it comes out im going to watch.
    wont hurt to watch.

  15. Ok… so movie makers are taking the pop culture phenomenon that is anime and making crappy movies to make a quick buck! Damn it! They’re ruining anime! Admit it! You can’t get the awesome action, the spot on special effects and the wonderfully expressive characters that you find in anime and translate them to a two hour live action movie! Ugh. Seriously, why don’t they just think up their own ideas instead of stealing someone else’s and taking advantage of anime fans? I wasn’t too worried because they hadn’t made a mark on anything I liked… but now it’s really out of control. -.- These are classic, ground-breaking series and they’re ruining them.

  16. Two things. One I give Hollywood its props because at least they understand the beautiful gift to the world that is anime. Two if they were smart they would just take 5 die hard fans put them back stage as co directors and they would actually make a good movie for once. Those fans live and breath everything about it so they can tell you easily when you have really screwed up and best part they would mostlikely work for free or at least for props which or both sentimentally equally worthless to the normal idiot humanbeans but an Otaku is a special kind of Idiot and there is a lot to be said there. Best part is… no one will ever give any thought to the truth I just spoke or the 1 am dulusion this is “where is my D-Sword”

  17. Well, it kind of makes me cringe a little bit but on the positive side: I guess he does look a bit like Spike, in my opinion. Though I’m sure there could have been others out there better for the role. And that quality control deal makes me feel a lot more at ease.

As for his acting, I haven’t most of his movies but watching Thumbsucker (it’s decent), his acting wasn’t so bad particularly because he WASN’T playing a completely dull and serious character. Maybe he should stop playing so many of them… And it would make for a better Spike.
