Cowboy Bebop Movie will not be an origin story.

ANN reports Erwin Stoff, producer at 3 Arts Entertainment, as having said that the upcoming Cowboy Bebop movie will not be an origin story of its hero Spike Spiegel. “We start with Spike when he is in his present life already,” says he. The script, being written by Peter Craig, is yet to be completed; nevertheless, Stoff hopes the film will be made next year. He emphasises that Cowboy Bebop’s creator, Shinichiro Watanabe, will be the first to see the completed script and will have a hand in choosing directors. The film, being produced by 20th Century Fox and in which Keanu Reeves has expressed an interest, may center on the “Red Eye” storyline seen in the first episode of the series.

Any thoughts on this development? The anime series also begins with Spike and crew already involved in their acts of bounty-hunting derring-do, so this, along with co-operation from Watanabe, seems to indicate that the movie will be remaining remarkably faithful to its source. It may be too early to say for sure yet, but this is definitely one to watch. To discuss this, head on over to our forums.

I think that’s great.

The origin was never fully shown in the series anyways.
We can jump right into the action and people can
love it right away.

Hopefully it won’t use the cheesy graphics that Speed Racer
utilized. No amount of humor can justify those special effects!

Wow, I’m amazed! It sounds too good to be true, the way they’re moving about this. And the fact that Watanabe gets to see the script and helps pick a director! That’s great! I’m not sure if it’s getting more clout because Reeves is involved or if this is the new direction Fox said they might be taking with it’s comic properties post Dark Knight’s success. I know they went back and did some re-shoots on Wolverine that I’ve heard made it a bit darker. Perhaps Fox sees the light??? One can hope. May be too late for Dragonball though, unfortunately.

still not down with reeves… Can’t they go with an unknown that looks and fits the part? like what they did in superman returns… I think star billing is overrated, especially when there’s many other selling points to a movie such as cowboy bebop.

As much as i’d love to see this anime turned live action I forsee to many inaccurate potrayals of each and every character not to mention the (STARS) that want to be apart of it (and would obviously ruin its purity just by being present in the picture) the last horrible cast i saw in a movie that could of been decent was the role of monica in maxpayne… jackie from that 70’s show seemed more like a cruel joke. It will really piss me off if hollywood finds a way to FUCK this film up… don’t cast any major stars. nobody who respects this anime will respect the movie if thats done.

And Keanu Reeves?? that guy doesn’t have talent for shit!! especialy after the matrix series. he’s nothing but a fuckin robot. and i swear i will hunt down the film crew and the producers if they try to make this into a movie, because Bebop is my favorite anime and you DO NOT FUCK WITH THE BEBOP CREW.

Truth be told this is one of our anime babies. Little do typical fans know how much we treasure stories like this and the intense characters that come with it. All I can say is that a company such as Fox has the potential to deliver, as far as asthetics are concerned. Reeves needs to stick to characters that fit his acting abilities. I am afraid that despite his advantages over other possibilites, his abilities are not within the scope of a character such as that of Spike. Expression coming first to mind and finesse coming second, and his lacking thereof. I only hope that he will make a sacrifice and choose to play another role in the film given his statements. Furthermore, I would like to see to it that Fox makes this as acurately depicted as possible. Both in story and in character. The movie industry is known for it’s marketing of crap, and I don’t like seeing someone sling crap on our baby.

Honestly the idea of a live action Cowboy Bebop is grandly offensive. The beauty of an anime is that you create more realistic characters because there is no person associated with them. Having anyone playing these characters at all would only destroy the grandeur of this classic. Consider this: what would Spike say to anyone pretending to be him? I watch anime because it is NOT live action and at this point I also question the capabilities of anyone other than the series creator to actually capture any of the feel. A good example is the Spiderman movies. Even with direct assistance from the actual creators and Marvel itself they were still able to mess up most of the characters. Anyone who watches Cowboy Bebop is going to see the gaping wounds from a mile off. Oh, and if Mr. Reeves takes part it’ll die before the script is written. If they have to mangle it they’ll have to use a mass of no-names that we’ll never see on television again.

WTF?? i would rather see a complete cast of unknowns than stars. what they need is people that know how to act, not Keanu Reeves even though the creator himself shall be there, i still feel that they will humanize the characters beyond belief. i mean is that not why we love the Bebop Crew, because they are pposite extremes that just keep pulling back to each other like magnets, and they are not just a couple of bounty hunters or people, but our family. and as stranger said about the graphics, they might do that, i mean, surely there is no way they would leave out the actual Bebop ship itself right??? And what of Faye’s cruiser, Jet’s Hammerhead, and most certainly the SWORDFISH. :,(

All i can say is that Keanu will have hell to pay if he fucks this up.
